AppLovin for ecommerce: what the explainers get right and the step they skip

The most-watched AppLovin ecommerce explainer is accurate on format, attention and attribution. Its advice to copy your Meta winners is how most accounts plateau. The missing step is native creative supply.

TL;DR. The AppLovin explainer most commerce marketers have watched is Pep Houwen's "AppLovin Ads Explained (Ecommerce's Secret Goldmine)", about 10,000 views. It is a fair primer: video only, portrait, sound off, 30 to 45 seconds the sweet spot, captions mandatory, the end card is where most clicks happen, click attribution only, 70 to 80 percent of conversions inside an hour. It also gives one piece of advice we would reverse: "start with your best performing creatives... and just copy what you already have on this new platform." That is how most accounts arrive, and it is how most of them plateau. Here is what the explainer gets right, and the production step it skips.

What the explainer gets right

Houwen, CEO of the agency Smart Marketer, describes the mechanics accurately and in buyer language:

  • Format. "Video only in portrait mode, generally with the sound off. And the videos can be a maximum of 60 seconds, but the sweet spot is generally between 30 and 45 seconds. And captions are really mandatory because a lot of these people are playing these games on mute."
  • Attention. "Users are forced to watch the full video. They'll watch 30 to 60 seconds and their eyes remain on the phone screen until the button skip now pops up."
  • The end card. "After your video completes, the end card appears. And this is critical because the majority of the clicks happen on the end card, not during the video... generally the end card needs a large call to action button, a clear benefit stack, a price or promotion if you're running that, and strong product visuals. Think of it already as a mini landing page."
  • Attribution. "This is click attribution only. So we don't have to deal with any view-through attribution windows... 70 to 80% of the conversions happen within the first hour after the click."
  • Who the audience is. Majority female, mid-30s, working adults, often parents, "in relaxation mode."

All of that matches AppLovin's own published guidance and its CEO's description of the unit. If you want the format in one place with the published numbers, it is in our AppLovin creative guide.

The advice we would reverse

"If you have video ads that are doing well on Meta, it's very likely they can do well here as well. So start with your best performing creatives and your best performing funnel and just copy what you already have on this new platform."

As a first week, fine. As a strategy, it is the single most common reason accounts stall. Three reasons, in order of damage:

  1. Length. A Meta winner is built to make its case in three seconds and is often eight seconds long. The explainer's own sweet spot is 30 to 45. The repurposed ad runs out of material with 80 percent of the attention still available.
  2. Register. The explainer's own audience description is a parent mid-game with the sound off. A feed ad talks to a scroller who might be shopping. Same product, different person, different room.
  3. Supply. AppLovin's June 2026 data put the average top campaign at 182 active creatives, with full libraries beating hand-curated sets by 7 to 23 percent, and its support documentation says not to pause creatives. A Meta library of twelve winners is not a library here. The optimiser has nothing to distribute across.

So the honest version of the advice is: start with your Meta winners to get the pixel firing and the first read, and in the same week start producing native 30 to 45 second cuts as concept systems, because the ceiling on the repurposed set arrives within a month and looks like a channel problem. The second thing the explainer skips: where the click lands

The explainer calls the end card "a mini landing page", which is right, and then stops. The end card is one screen. The click goes to a page on your domain, and with 70 to 80 percent of conversions inside an hour, that page has to continue the argument the video made. In almost every account we read, the ads are specific and the pages are generic. The audit takes an afternoon: write the promise of each top ad in one sentence, open the page it points at, write the first sentence a visitor reads, count the mismatches. Method and evidence in landing page vs product page for paid ads.

Where we agree completely

"Precision targeting based on actual purchase behavior... The same people who are in-app purchasers are also excellent e-commerce customers." That is the thesis of the channel and it is why the ad decides the audience: the model finds the buyer from how the ad performs, so the creative is the targeting. Which brings the argument back to the same place. The platform does the targeting. What is left to the advertiser is the supply and the quality of 30 to 45 second native video, the end card, and the page. Those are production decisions, and they are the whole game.

Questions people ask

Can I run my Meta ads on AppLovin? Yes, and it is a reasonable first week. Expect a ceiling from length, register and library size within a month, and start native production in parallel.

What length works on AppLovin? The explainer's sweet spot is 30 to 45 seconds; AppLovin's own guidance is to focus on videos longer than 30 seconds; the June 2026 top performers averaged 37.4 seconds.

Is the end card really where the clicks happen? By the explainer's account, yes: the majority of clicks come on the end card, not during the video. Treat it as creative and test it as its own variable. See end cards.

Do I need an agency to get on AppLovin? The explainer says access was invite-only in late 2025 and loosening; check the current state in Axon Ads Manager. Whether you need help depends on whether you can produce native video at volume, not on the account setup.
